We are currently in the midst of harvesting Cistus Ladanifer for the production of essential oil and hydrosol.
The Cistus essential oil is highly valued in perfumery for its deep, balsamic, and resinous aroma, adding unique warmth and sophistication to fragrances. Its aromatic profile combines amber, earthy, and slightly spicy notes, enriching the bases of perfumes and evoking the Mediterranean nature where it originates. This customizable aroma, which sits in the middle notes and can also influence the top and base notes, offers perfumers exceptional versatility for creating complex and balanced compositions.
One of the most appreciated qualities of Cistus essential oil in perfumery is its ability to act as a natural fixative. This means it helps to prolong the duration of the fragrance on the skin, allowing other ingredients to maintain their intensity for longer.
In our region, the southwest of the Spanish peninsula, Cistus essential oil typically presents a chemotype rich in α-pinene, accompanied by other compounds like 1,8-cineole, limonene, and borneol. This profile provides a fresh, resinous, and balsamic aroma, with good fixation for perfumery and therapeutic properties.
In other regions of the peninsula, for example, in the center-north, the profile may be more sesquiterpenic, with viridiflorol and other terpene alcohols predominating, which modify the intensity and warmth of the aroma. Regarding Morocco and France, while their oils also contain α-pinene, the chemotypes tend to be more varied due to greater genetic and environmental heterogeneity. In France, the main biotype is characterized by a significant proportion of the compound ledol, while in Morocco the Mauritanica subspecies produces oils with a more sesquiterpenic and less intense aromatic profile. These chemical nuances influence the aroma, longevity, and therapeutic effects, positioning the oil from the southwest of Spain as the most appreciated for high standards in cosmetics and perfumery.
