“Thyme and Oregano: Essential Oils for the Heart”

The study on thyme and oregano essential oils, led by the Biomedical Research Institute of Malaga and the CIBERCV, used advanced multi-omic technology and humanized mouse models with microbiota from patients with coronary disease and type 2 diabetes. The results demonstrated not only immediate cardiovascular benefits but also a positive modulation of mitochondrial metabolism, reduction of oxidative stress, and optimization of proteins cardiac involved in contraction and cellular protection. This approach allowed for the identification of precise molecular mechanisms by which essential oils not only act as antioxidants, but also regulate the interaction between the gut microbiota and cardiac function, reinforcing their potential use as a nutraceutical tool in the prevention and management of severe cardiometabolic risk.
